Beatty Is Closer Than You Think
Desert beauty, mining history, good food and dark skies, all a little over
an hour from Pahrump

Most Pahrump residents have driven through
Beatty. Fewer have actually stopped.
You know the drill. Fuel at the edge of town,
maybe a snack, then back on Highway 95
toward Reno or the turnoff for Death Valley.
Beatty goes by in a few minutes.
That’s the mistake.
Ask Ginny Faulkner of the Beatty Chamber of
Commerce what a first-time visitor should
know, and she doesn’t start with the
restaurants or the museum. She starts with the
mountains.
“The mountains are beautiful,” she said. “They
have different rock formations and colors in
them, and it’s really something to see.”
Some people hear the word desert and picture
rocks, dust and empty land. Ginny looks at the
same ridgelines and sees faces — noses,
foreheads, sleeping figures stretched out like
giants under the Nevada sky. Once she points
that out, you can’t unsee it. The drive stops
being the boring part.
Beatty sits roughly 73 miles northwest of
Pahrump, a little over an hour up Highway 95
through the open desert of southern Nye
Chamber keeps a current dining guide for
exactly that reason.
Then there’s the Death Valley Nut & Candy
Company. It’s an enormous candy store that
turned into an attraction — aisle after aisle of
chocolates, gummies, taffy, old-fashioned
candy, nuts, jerky, gifts and toys, plus
homemade ice cream that earns its keep on a
warm Nevada afternoon. Watch what happens
to the adults in there. They walk in as
grownups and spend twenty minutes hunting
for candy they haven’t seen since grade school.
The Town That Boomed — and the
One That Didn’t
Beatty’s story is a mining story. Gold
discoveries lit up the surrounding Bullfrog
Mining District in the early 1900s, and
settlements appeared almost overnight. Some
lasted. Some vanished nearly as fast as they
arrived.
Rhyolite is the worth the drive, about four
miles west of Beatty on Highway 374.
Founded after the gold strikes of 1905, it grew
into a town with serious ambitions:
substantial buildings, banks, churches, hotels,
a school, an opera house, telephone service,
electricity, even a stock exchange. Today the
surviving walls, foundations and historic
railroad depot stand as a reminder of how fast
Nevada could build a city — and how fast it
could walk away from one.
Right beside the ruins sits something nobody
expects: the Goldwell Open Air Museum.
Ghostlike figures, a towering female form and

County. That’s close enough for a comfortable
day trip and far enough to feel like you went
somewhere. Here’s what’s waiting when you
get there.
Beautiful. Historic. Food.
Ask for three words that sum up the town, and
this is where the conversation eventually
lands: beautiful, historic, food.
The third one isn’t grammatical. It’s accurate.
For a town its size, Beatty has a real collection
of locally owned places to eat — Smokin’ J’s
BBQ, Big Tony’s, Mama Sara’s, the Sourdough,
Roadhouse 95, the local VFW, the Stagecoach
Hotel & Casino. Between them you’ll find
barbecue, Mexican food, burgers, chili, pizza,
diner breakfasts, sandwiches and cold drinks.
Hours shift in a small town, so check before
you build a trip around one kitchen. The

other sculptures rise out of the desert as if they
were always meant to be there. The outdoor
grounds are open around the clock; the visitor
center keeps shorter hours. Rhyolite and
Goldwell together will fill a morning or an
afternoon without trying.
Start With the Museum
Before you head out to the ruins, Ginny
recommends a stop at the Beatty Museum and
Historical Society — the big green building on
Main Street, open daily according to the
Chamber’s visitor information. Schedules
change, so confirm hours before you go.
The museum holds photographs, documents,
books, mining artifacts and equipment from
Beatty, Rhyolite and the Bullfrog district.
Spend a half hour in there and the ruins
change on you. These weren’t just dusty
camps. They were communities — families,
businesses, ambition, hardship. Walk Rhyolite
afterward and you’re not looking at
abandoned walls anymore. You’re looking at
what’s left of people’s plans.
Trails, Fossils and Roadrunners
If you’d rather be outside than in a museum,
the desert around Beatty offers hiking,
mountain biking, Jeep trips, ATV riding,
photography, geocaching and backcountry
exploring, much of it on historic mining
routes. Trails run from easy outings to true
four-wheel-drive work. Some routes may shift
as mining exploration and development move
forward, but Ginny said efforts are being made
to preserve and reroute recreational access
where necessary.
Southeast of town sits the Beatty Mudmound,
a limestone formation holding fossils roughly
480 million years old. Long before Nevada was
a desert, this ground sat underwater and
supported abundant marine life. The proof is
still in the rock.
The birds surprise people too. Springs, trees
and wetlands along the Amargosa River make
the Oasis Valley waterways real habitat for
resident and migrating birds — roadrunners
included. And south of town, hidden in the
tamarisk trees near Highway 95, there’s
catch-and-release fishing at Bombo’s Pond.
Fishing. In the desert. Beatty keeps doing that
to you.
A Gateway to Death Valley
Beatty is widely known as the Gateway to
Death Valley, and the title is earned. Highway
374 and Daylight Pass put you into the park at
some of its broadest, most dramatic views.
Plenty of visitors spend the morning in Beatty,
Rhyolite and Goldwell, then roll into the park
after lunch. With lodging, RV spaces, fuel,
restaurants and groceries, the town works fine
as a base for a longer stay.
One caution: Scotty’s Castle remains closed to
general access because of extensive flood and
fire damage. Limited ticketed tours may
occasionally be offered with advance
reservations, but check with the National Park
Service before pointing the car that way.
Stay for Dark
Beatty’s best attraction doesn’t show up until
the sun goes down.
Drive a few miles out of town, kill the
headlights and look up. With almost no city
glare, the sky opens into a field of stars most
people haven’t seen in years. Ginny suggests
bringing a telescope — or just parking
somewhere safe and giving your eyes time to
adjust. Beatty sits along Nevada’s “Starry-est
Route in America,” an astrotourism route
linking Death Valley and Great Basin national
parks across rural Nevada. The silence, the
dark and that enormous sky may end up being
the part of the trip you talk about.
Or Come When It’s Loud
If quiet isn’t your thing, there’s Beatty Days,
the town’s signature celebration, set for
October 30 through November 1, 2026, at
Cottonwood Park. Parade, car show, chili
cook-off, bed races, pet parade, plenty of
small-town entertainment. The local fire
department also puts on an old-fashioned
Fourth of July with family contests, races and
games.
That’s the thing about Beatty. It isn’t a roadside
attraction. It’s a working town where the
neighbors still show up for each other — and
where visitors are invited to join in.
Slow Down First
Make the Chamber of Commerce your first
stop. It stocks brochures on the trails, the
birds, the stargazing, the geocaching, Death
Valley and the dining — the things you’d drive
right past without local guidance.
Because that’s Beatty’s real trick: almost none
of what makes it worth the trip is visible from
Highway 95. You have to slow down. You have
to look at the colors in the mountains, take the
turn toward Rhyolite, walk the museum, talk
with the locals, order lunch. You have to stay
past sunset.
Ginny’s invitation to Pahrump is simple: come
see the museum, the candy store, the
restaurants and the scenery.
It’s all there. It’s been there the whole time.
